How to Use a Dewalt Jump Starter

Did you visit this page because you want to know how to use a Dewalt jump starter? Well, you’re on the right page. This is virtually a review of Dewalt jump starter. It is important to let you know that Dewalt is much more than a jump starter. It is a complete power booster.

It has other functions apart from its ability to jump-start a car. The device has two USB ports to charge your phone, tablet, digital camera, or other smaller devices. To activate the USB function, press the USB button once. You can press it again to deactivate it.

Also, it has an air compressor with which you can inflate your tire. However, the compressor is very noisy. To use it, you’ve got to press the Air button. The current pressure level of your tire will appear on its display unit. Select your preferred pressure level and connect the compressor hose to the valve of your tire.

It will stop automatically when it gets to the chosen pressure level. You can press the Air button again to deactivate the air compressor function.

The device has two bright LED lights. You may want to change your tire at night. The LED lights will become useful. To turn them on, just press the “Light” button. And press the button again to turn them off. What is displayed on the display unit depends on the active function.

When the air compressor function is active, the pressure gauge figures will be displayed. You can then change the figure to your targeted pressure level. When the device is in jump starter mode, the battery level and voltage are displayed.

Now, let’s discuss how to use the device to jump-start your car.

How To Use A Dewalt Jump Starter: 8 Easy Steps

Step 1 – Confirm That The Jump Starter Is Fully Charged

It is necessary to charge your jump starter after every jump-starting session. So, it will be ready anytime you need it. Nevertheless, you need to check the voltage on the display unit to be sure it is fully charged. The voltage should be at least 12 volts. If it is not up to that, it won’t charge your car. You may need to charge it before you use it.

Step 2 – Open Your Hood

Open the hood of your car and locate the battery. Place the jump starter close to your battery, but it needs to stay on a flat surface so that it does not fall down when you’re cranking your car.

Step 3 – Identify The Battery Terminals

Don’t just connect any clamp to any battery terminal. It could lead to an explosion. Find out which of the battery terminal is positive. It should be labeled P, POS, or +. If you still cannot find it, seek help. Don’t guess.  Once you’re able to identify the positive terminal, you automatically know that the other terminal is negative.

Step 4 – Connect The Red Clamp To The Positive Terminal

The jump starter has two black cables. One is terminated with a red clamp, while the other has a black clamp. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal. Make sure it is firm.

Step 5 – Connect The Black Clamp To A Metal Frame

Connect the black clamp to a metal frame near the battery. This is called grounding.  In our case, we connected the black clamp to the alternator of our bus, and it worked. Make sure the connection is very firm. It may not work if it’s loose.

Step 6 – Switch On The Jump Starter

To activate the jump starter function, just turn the jump starter knob to “on”. Turn the knob 90-degrees clockwise.

Step 7 – Try To Start Your Car

Now, you can go into your car and turn your ignition on like you always do when you want to start the car. It should start in less than 5 seconds. We used the jump starter to start a bus that had been left idle for more than six months, and it worked like magic.

If your car does not start, don’t crank it longer than 5 seconds. Wait for 3 minutes and try it again. If your car does not start after three attempts, don’t try it again. It means there’s an underlying problem that must be solved. Find out what the problem is.

On the other hand, if your car starts, let it run for at least 5 minutes before you drive away.

Step 8 – Remove The Device

Once your car starts, you need to deactivate the jump starter by turning the knob 90 degrees counterclockwise. And disconnect it. Remove the red clamp first. Then you remove the black clamp. Close the hood and keep the jump starter in the trunk of your car. Don’t forget to charge it when you get home. The device has to be fully charged always.

That’s all. These are the steps to take to jump-start your car with the jump starter.

How To Turn Off A Dewalt Jump Starter

The jump starter knob is at the front of the device. It is on the left-hand side of the display unit. To switch it on, turn the knob 90 degrees to the right or clockwise. After jump-starting your car, you can turn the jump starter off by turning the knob 90 degrees to the left or counterclockwise.  The device is quite easy to use.

The display unit will show you the battery level of your jump starter and its voltage. The voltage must be at least 12 volts before it can jump-start your car. If it is not up to 12 volts, you need to charge it.

How To Charge A Dewalt Jump Starter

There are three ways to charge it. First, you can connect it to the cigarette lighter port in your car. You’ll find the cigarette lighter cable in its pack. One end of the cable will be plugged into the cigarette lighter port and the other one will go into the port at the back of the Dewalt power booster. The device will indicate when it is fully charged.

The second way to charge the jump starter is through your outlet.  There are a pair of charging prongs at the back of the device. You need to purchase an adapter. The adapter will be connected to the prongs and plugged into your socket.

The third way is to remove the battery of your jump starter and plug it into a Dewalt 20V power station. Then, you plug the power station into your outlet. The question is, why do you need to charge your jump starter’s battery through a power station when you can charge it directly through an outlet without having to remove the battery?

The answer is simple. The power station shortens the charging time.

When you charge your jump starter directly, it may take between 12 and 24 hours, depending on the battery level. But if you charge it through Dewalt’s power station, it will take 90 minutes or less.

Why Is My Dewalt Jump Starter Not Charging?

There are two major reasons why your jump starter may not charge. It is either the charging adapter is not working or the battery of your jump starter no longer holds a charge. You need to find out what the problem is. Remove the battery of your jump starter and charge it through the Dewalt power station.

If the battery begins to charge, it means that the charging adapter is faulty or the device has packed up. Try to charge the device in your car through the cigarette lighter port. If it charges, then you’re sure it is the charging adapter that is not working. Change it as quickly as possible.

On the other hand, if the battery does not charge in a power station, then the battery has packed up. You need to change it. If you eventually find out that both adapter and battery are fine, but the unit still does not charge, then your jump starter has a problem. Consult an expert.

If the product is still under warranty, your best bet will be to complain to Dewalt’s customer care team for the solution to the problem.

How To Charge A DeWalt 20V Battery?

To charge a Dewalt 20v battery, you need a Dewalt power station.  Place the battery in the power station. Plug the power station into an outlet and switch on the outlet. A red indicator light will come up. It shows that the battery is charging. No matter how low the battery is, it will take a maximum of 90 minutes to charge it. And when it is full, it will indicate. The red light will change to green.

Final Thoughts

Once again, the Dewalt jump starter is more than a jump starter. It is a power booster. In addition to its jump starter function, it also has an air compressor, two USB ports, a large display unit, and two LED lights. This is why we recommend it.
